Target Field sets ‘environmental standard in sports’

That brand new Colorado-grown turf in Target Field will be watered with good old-fashioned recycled Minnesota rain water, the Minnesota Twins announced Tuesday.

The Twins and one of their newest sponsors, Minneapolis-based Pentair Inc., said that the team’s new ballpark in downtown Minneapolis will be the first major sports facility anywhere to be irrigated and washed down with recycled rain water.

The recycling system, designed and installed by Pentair, will collect water from Target Field’s seven acres and drain it into a 100,000-gallon cistern buried below the field. There the water will be disinfected and treated.

Chris Dickerson has Gone Green

Reds outfielder Chris Dickerson has gone green.

Besides playing Major League Baseball, promoting environmental awareness is his favorite pastime.

Dickerson, 27, envisions using alternative sources of energy at Great American Ball Park, as well as “getting Little Leagues to use solar power and eventually maybe even wind energy to power not only the stadium lights but the scoreboards.”

WPG High School Education Events

NFL and MLB Players Appeared Together at Local High Schools to Speak on Character Education, Environmental Awareness and Careers in Sports. The NFL Alumni Association, Sportz Ventures, LLC and MLB’s We Play Green Foundation joined forces during Super Bowl week to host free educational presentations at local schools. These presentations were hosted by current and former professional athletes such as Tim Watson (Philadelphia Eagles), Chris Dickerson (Cincinnati Reds), Jack Cassel (Houston Astros and brother of Patriots QB, Matt Cassel) and others.

Cleveland Indians Go Green

Cleveland Indians and Green Energy Ohio bring solar power to Jacobs Field; Doty and Miller Architects to design and install 42 GE solar panels. The  Cleveland Indians and Green Energy Ohio are proud to announce the installation of a new solar electric system at Jacobs Field – the first American League ballpark to go solar. The solar installation will provide 8.4 kilowatts of clean, renewable electricity and introduce solar energy concepts to millions in Northeast Ohio.
